Working from home?In his article for the International Journal for Indoor Environment and Health, David Wyon concludes,
"It has now been shown beyond reasonable doubt that poor indoor air quality in buildings can decrease productivity in addition to causing visitors to express dissatisfaction. The size of the effect on most aspects of office work performance appears to be as high as 6-9%, the higher value being obtained in field validation studies. It is usually more energy-efficient to eliminate sources of pollution than to increase outdoor air supply rates." It's going to take time for reliable studies to be made available concerning the health effects of workforce migration to a remote (and most often home) setting, but if your home is your new office, or more so than it was, you may want to give more attention to the air you are breathing. Cleaning those ducts is one way to do that! |

Air DuctsIf your house it new or over ten years old, you think you have a mold problem, or you dust and dust but it doesn't seem to get the job done, it's time to clean your ducts. FiltersFilters should generally be changed every 90 days. This is not just for the health of the air in your home but for the longevity of the components in your HVAC. This is an area of house cleaning that is easy to overlook, unless you have allergies, in which case you can probably pinpoint the moment your filters have gone out of date. If you are heating or cooling your home, changing air filters is one of the most significant determinants of the air quality in your home.

HVACSpeaking of that HVAC... Cleaning the ducts in your home is important, but it's a job half done if the cleaning job fails to include the components of your HVAC. You may have employed other cleaning services, ranging from carpet cleaning to window cleaning, but you haven't attended to this, there is a good chance you will be changing your HVAC out well before you would have needed to.

Dryer ExhaustThis has been in the news in recent years, due to the fire hazard posed by dryer exhaust clogged with lint. It's easy to overlook, but fix this and your clothes will dry better too! This is another area of house cleaning that is easy to overlook, for the simple reason that you can't see the buildup and it doesn't usually announce itself as a problem...until it does. One sign of this is that your clothes aren't getting as dry as they used to get. Another sign is that your house is catching on fire.
